Superhero Storytime: Flight
July 8, 2015
We read:
Superhero ABC by Bob McLeod
Flight School by Lita Judge
Let's Say Hi to Friends Who Fly! by Mo Willems
Rhymes:
"Did You Ever See a Hero?" (Tune: Did you ever see a lassie)
Did you ever see a hero, a hero, a hero,
Did you ever see a hero, flying through the sky? Fly this way and that way and this way and that way.
Did you ever see a hero flying through the sky?
“Superkid”
Put your hands way up high (raise arms up in the air)
Like a superkid flying across the sky! (assume flying position) Fly to the left, now fly to the right (lean to your left, then right)
Then show me your muscles with all your might! (make arm muscles) Now superkid's putting his suit away, (bring arms down slowly)
So he can go flying another day. (rest hands in lap)
"Five Superheroes" watch a video of this rhyme here
Five superheroes are ready to fly
Here comes the villian; stop that guy!! This superhero can save the day
And off he flies- up, up, and away!
Count down four...three...two...one
"I'm A Little Airplane" (Tune: I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little airplane, (children raise arms at sides to shoulder height.) Now watch me fly! (They spin one of their arms in front of them as if it were a propeller) Here are my instruments
From down low to up high. (With their other arm, they reach from the ground to above their heads.) First I get revved up. (Children make engine noises while still spinning their arms.) Then I can fly, (Children raise arms to shoulder height.) Lifting off the runway (They start walking forward.) Up into the sky! (They go up on their tiptoes and continue to move forward. Let them circle awhile before returning to their original positions.)
Activities:
Yoga Poses
Warrior 1
Stand in mountain pose at the top of your mat and take a big step back with your left leg
Check out your back foot it should be flat on the ground with your toes pointing slightly out to the left side
Bend your front knee until it is lined up over your ankle
Face your hips straight ahead
Keeping your legs steady, lift your upper body tall now reach your arms straight out in front of your heart
Keeping your arms straight and strong lift your chest and your arms so that they are pointing toward the ceiling
Take a few full breaths and say I am brave
Warrior 2
Instead of turning your hips to face the front, open them up so that your torso turned to your left side
Open your arms so that your right arm is straight over your right leg and your left arm is extended behind you.
Gaze out past your finger tips and lean forward and backward
Say I am bold
Warrior 3
We are going to try and balance, look up at the spot on the wall and try to straighten your front leg and the toes of your back leg pointing down.
Reach your arms back parallel to the ground reaching for your foot or out past the top of your head.
Don’t worry if you can only lift your leg just a little bit! You are flying!
Green Screen:
At the end of the storytime, we also let each child lie down on the green screen and pretend to fly. Then a staff member edited the pictures, subbing in a sky background and posted them on the library's flickr page!
Craft:
Using a square piece of tissue paper, four pieces of string, tape and a paper clip, we made parachutes. Just tape the string to the four corners of the tissue paper, tie all four pieces in a knot at the bottom, and use the paper clip as a weight. Voila!
